My Cat Had Gastrointestinal Lymphoma: Saying Goodbye to Adah

On June 6, 2026, I lost my cat Adah. I'm still in shock, still crying on and off, and honestly still reaching for her out of habit. She was 8 years old and had been by my side for 7 of them. Writing this is hard, but I know it's something I need to do, because if you're searching for information about feline gastrointestinal lymphoma or trying to figure out what comes next after losing your cat, I want you to know you're not alone. I've been right where you are. Adah wasn't just a cat to me; she was like a daughter. She was the one who helped me survive losing my Maltese dog back in February 2019. I got her at the end of March that same year. She was actually my first cat ever. And somehow, without me even realizing it, she became the center of my world. I had no idea that choosing her would be one of the best decisions of my life or that letting her go would be one of the hardest. ⚡ Key Takeaways 🐱 Feline GI lymphoma is the most common c...

Important Skincare Tips for Melanin-Rich Skin

As someone who adores skincare and considers it an essential part of my self-care rituals, I've discovered through research and experience that those with melanin-rich skin – commonly people of color – require specific attention and specially tailored care. This becomes particularly important if, like me, you also happen to have acne-prone skin (an absolute pain, I know).

So, I've taken it upon myself to gather valuable insights and tips, creating an ultimate guide to help you give your beautifully pigmented skin the love and care it deserves. By understanding the unique characteristics and challenges of melanin-rich skin, you'll be better equipped to maintain your skin's health and radiance.

Love Thy Melanin & Know Thy Skin

First off, embrace the fact that your melanin is pure magic. But to make that magic shine even brighter, it's crucial to understand your specific skin type. Be it oily, dry, combination, or sensitive, knowing your skin type helps you choose the right products and treatments that best address your needs.

Bottom line: You shouldn't purchase any skincare products until you're 100% sure of your skin type.

Don't Skimp On Sunscreen

I know, I know – you've probably heard this a gazillion times already. But guess what? I'm still going to remind you: SPF is your BFF! While melanin provides some natural sun protection, slathering on a broad-spectrum SPF of at least 30 daily is non-negotiable. This will protect your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays that can cause premature aging and skin cancer.

Keep It Clean, Keep It Moist

The foundation of any fabulous skincare routine is understanding the importance of cleansing and moisturizing. Opt for a gentle cleanser that won't strip your skin of its natural oils, and follow up with a hydrating, melanin-friendly moisturizer that contains ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides. Your skin will thank you for it!

This one from Neutrogena is my current favorite; it's a hydrating serum with SPF 60 that makes your skin glow!

Easy-Peasy Daily Skincare Regimen:

  1. Cleanse
  2. Tone
  3. Apply serum(s)—I'm fond of hyaluronic acid and niacinamide serums.
  4. Moisturize
  5. (drum roll) Sunscreen!

Give Your Skin a Party: Weekly Treatments

Sometimes your skin needs a little more than just the basic daily routine. Weekly treatments like exfoliation and masking are ideal to give your melanin-rich skin the extra love it deserves.

Weekly Skin Fiesta Ideas:

  • Exfoliate: Use a gentle scrub or a chemical exfoliant (like AHA or BHA) once or twice a week to help slough off dead skin cells, revealing a brighter complexion.
  • Masking: Treat your skin to a soothing mask with ingredients like clay, charcoal, or green tea for a spa-like experience that nourishes your complexion.
Since I have oily, acne-prone skin, I like to do a clay mask every three to four days. I also exfoliate every other night using this gentle serum.

Let's Talk About Hyperpigmentation

Melanin-rich skin has a higher tendency to develop hyperpigmentation, thanks to our gifted abundance of melanin. While annoying (ugh, acne scars and dark spots), there are solutions.

  • Vitamin C serums: Daily topical application of this powerhouse antioxidant can help lighten dark spots and improve skin texture.
  • Retinoids: Known for their amazing anti-aging benefits, they can also help reduce hyperpigmentation by promoting cell turnover. Just be mindful to use a lower concentration (and always wear sunscreen) if you're new to retinoids.
  • AHA/BHA products: Regular exfoliation with these chemical peels can help in reducing the appearance of dark spots and blemishes.

That's a Wrap!

Now you have the golden ticket to flaunt your fabulous melanin-rich skin. Just remember that consistency is key, and your skin will be glowing for days! 💁🏾‍♀️
