I didn't plan on spending this year saying goodbye. In June, I lost my cat Adah to cancer I didn't even know she had, and a few weeks later our guinea pig Sugar was gone too. So when I sat down to watch a few sneak-peek clips from Just One Life, a new faith-based drama about hope when life doesn't go as planned, I didn't expect to see so much of my own year in them.
The film asks, "What will you do with the life you've been given?" I don't have a tidy answer, but I've been living with that question for months.

⚡ Key Takeaways
- 🎬 Just One Life is a PG-13 faith-based drama about a caregiver starting over and the man whose faith challenges her.
- 💔 It asks if faith holds up when answers never come, which hit home after losing my cat Adah.
- 🙏 A line about letting go in the "Pray" clip is the most relatable thing I've heard all year.
- 💪 My health journey with PCOS and prediabetes taught me hope is something I practice.
- 📺 It's a good pick if you're grieving, caregiving, or starting over.
What Is the Just One Life Movie About?
Just One Life follows Renee, who moves across the country for a fresh start after years of caring for her mother. She meets Sam, an astronomy professor whose optimism and faith push back on how she sees her future. It's a romance, but it's also about grief, second chances, and finding purpose. It's rated PG-13 and is set for streaming platforms in early November.
Can Faith Hold Up When the Answers Never Come?
In the "Question" clip, Renee's mom has cancer, goes into remission, and then a sudden heart attack takes her. I thought about Adah right away. She was sick, seemed to get better for a little while, then got worse and was gone fast. What still stings is that I didn't realize it was cancer, since her lymphoma was first diagnosed as IBD. I wrote about that in what happened when my cat had gastrointestinal lymphoma.
I've asked God a lot of "why" questions since June without clear answers. But I've felt that He hasn't gone anywhere. Psalm 34:18 (NLT) says, "The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed." Some days, that verse is enough.
"How Do I Let Go of Something I Don't Want to Let Go Of?"
That line from the "Pray" clip stopped me. In the past five years, I've lost people and pets I love. Adah passed on June 6, and our guinea pig Sugar died of old age on July 15. I made a memorial spot for Adah with a wooden heart, her picture, and a jar holding her pink collar. It helps, but I still don't know how to let go.
Maybe that's why the question works as a prayer. It doesn't try to sound holy. Sometimes all I've got is, "God, I don't want to do this, so please help me do it anyway."
What I'm Doing With the Life I've Been Given
My life didn't go as planned in other ways too. PCOS, prediabetes, insulin resistance, and anxiety mean my body doesn't always cooperate. Last Christmas, I stopped waiting for the perfect time and started taking care of myself, with my doctor in the loop. I'm down more than 25 pounds, and I walk after lunch and dinner every day. I shared more in my managing PCOS blood sugar in the fall post. Hope hasn't shown up on its own for me. It's a choice, and a lot of days it starts with putting my shoes on.
Who Should Watch Just One Life?
If you're grieving, caring for a parent, or starting over, this one's for you. Fair warning: it deals with cancer and loss, so it might hit hard if your grief is fresh. I've only seen the clips and trailer, but small moments made me want more. The BC talk in the "Seek" clip took me back to Sunday School, where BC and AD confused me every time. And the diverse congregation in the "Trust" clip was refreshing to see.
Finding Hope When Life Doesn't Go as Planned
I don't know how the rest of Renee's story goes, or mine. But hope doesn't need everything to make sense first. If this year has been a hard one, Just One Life could start a conversation with God, a friend, or your small group. It'd also be a thoughtful movie night pick for someone caring for a parent or missing a pet. Watch the trailer and see how to watch the film on the official Just One Life page.
Just One Life FAQs
Is Just One Life a Christian movie?
Yes. It's an inspirational drama with clear faith themes, including prayer, trust, and questions about God when life hurts. Sam's faith is a big part of the story. Sam Hodges, president of Church Initiative, called it "a natural starting point for conversations about grief, suffering, and faith." That makes it a solid pick for a church movie night or a small group that wants something to talk about afterward.
Is Just One Life OK for kids?
It's rated PG-13, so it's a better fit for teens and adults. The story deals with a parent's cancer, death, and grief, which can be a lot for younger kids. It could also be a good conversation starter for a teen who's lost a grandparent or a pet. If you're planning a family movie night, watch the trailer together first and decide from there.
Where can I watch Just One Life?
The film had a limited theatrical release in early October and has been available to buy through its official website. According to GodTube, it's heading to rental and streaming platforms in early November, with an exact date still to come. For the latest viewing options, check the Just One Life movie page.
