The first thing I said when I saw this book was "wow," out loud, to nobody. Breath as Prayer, Special Edition by Jennifer Tucker comes wrapped in a frosted, slightly see-through sleeve over a black hardcover, and it's one of the prettiest books I've ever been sent. It's very feminine, and it's another book I just want to show off.
But I live with an anxiety disorder, so I wasn't going to judge this one by its cover. I wanted to know if the inside actually helps on a hard day. Here's what's in it, who it's for, the questions people ask about breath prayer, and what happened when I opened it up.
Disclosure: I received this item free in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are 100% my own.
⚡ Key Takeaways
- 🌸 Breath as Prayer, Special Edition by Jennifer Tucker is a 224-page hardcover devotional that pairs Scripture with slow breathing to help calm anxiety.
- 🙏 It has over 90 breath prayers, each with a key verse, a short devotion, and a simple prayer you breathe in and out.
- 📚 It also explains the science behind breathwork and the difference between everyday anxiety and anxiety disorders.
- 🎀 The special edition has a translucent vellum jacket, pink page edges, a built-in ribbon bookmark, and 10 bonus prayers.
- 🎁 It's a beautiful gift for anyone dealing with stress, anxiety, or grief, and it's easy to open to any page.
What Breath as Prayer Is About
Breath as Prayer teaches a simple practice called breath prayer. You take a short line from Scripture, then pray the first half as you breathe in and the second half as you breathe out. It slows your body down and points your mind toward God at the same time. Jennifer Tucker started using it to help calm her own anxiety, and the original book came out in 2022.
Each of the more than 90 entries has the same simple layout: a key Scripture verse, a short devotion, and a breath prayer based on that verse. The entries cover the stuff we all deal with, like fear, grief, trust, rest, and hope. There's also a quick-start guide to breath prayer, a section on the science of how slow breathing affects your nervous system, and guidance on using breath prayer as an anchor when anxiety hits.
Jennifer is an artist and bestselling author, and her first book, the original Breath as Prayer, won the ECPA Christian Book Award for New Author of the Year. She's written several other books on prayer, including one for kids, and she's an advocate for mental health. You can learn more about her work on Jennifer Tucker's Little House Studio site.
What's Different About the Special Edition?
This new special edition came out in November 2026 from Thomas Nelson. It's a 224-page hardcover in a larger 6-by-8-inch size (the original was 5-by-7). It adds 10 new bonus breath prayers, pink-stained page edges, a pink ribbon marker, floral endsheets, and that translucent vellum jacket over a black cover. The list price is $29.99.
Who This Book Is For
This book is for anyone who deals with stress, worry, or fear and wants a way to bring God into those moments. You don't need to have an anxiety disorder to get something out of it. If your heart starts racing before a hard conversation or you lie awake replaying your to-do list, this is for you.
It fits a lot of real seasons. Think about a woman sitting in a hospital waiting room, waiting on test results. A short breath prayer is something she can do right there without anyone noticing. Or someone grieving, who can't focus long enough to read a full chapter but can manage one verse and a few slow breaths. I lost my cat Adah this June, and I know how hard it is to read anything long when you're hurting.
The publisher also suggests it for grief and anxiety support groups, prayer ministries, and teens or young adults dealing with stress. I'd add busy moms, caregivers, and anybody whose job keeps their shoulders up around their ears all day.
What You Might Be Wondering
Is breath prayer biblical, or is it New Age?
This is the big one, and it deserves a straight answer. Some Christians get uneasy when they hear words like breath work or meditation, because those words get used in Eastern religions and secular mindfulness. Jennifer is clear that breath prayer is about focusing on Christ and Scripture. You're not emptying your mind or looking inside yourself for peace. You're filling your mind with God's Word.
Not everyone is fully sold on it, and that's fair. One reviewer at Becoming Christians wrote a careful review of Breath as Prayer, pointing out that Scripture never commands timing your prayers with your breathing. He didn't call the book New Age, though, and he praised its compassion and focus on Scripture. My take: breathing slowly while praying a Bible verse feels a lot like what David did when he told his own soul to be quiet and hope in God. I grew up Pentecostal, and we've never been shy about praying with our whole bodies.
Will this replace therapy or medication?
No, and the book doesn't claim it will. I manage my anxiety with my doctor, and that's not changing. Breath prayer is a tool you can use alongside real care, not instead of it. If your anxiety is getting in the way of daily life, please talk to your doctor or a counselor.
Is it realistic for a busy person?
Absolutely. Each entry is short. You can read the verse and devotion in about 3 to 5 minutes, and the breath prayer itself takes less than a minute. You don't have to go in order, either. You can flip to whatever you're feeling that day.
Is it a devotional or something you read cover to cover?
It's a devotional, built to be opened at random. The opening chapters explaining breath prayer and the science are worth reading first, but after that, there's no wrong order. That's what makes it great to keep on a nightstand or in your bag.
What Stood Out to Me
The design really is that good. The frosty, slightly translucent sleeve covers the front and back, and it's gorgeous. But the book looks great without it, too. The actual cover underneath is just as pretty, so you're not stuck with a plain book if the sleeve ever gets lost or torn.
It's smaller than some devotionals, but it's very well made. I love the built-in ribbon bookmark. The font size and line spacing are perfect, too. Nothing feels cramped, and it's easy to read even when your eyes are tired at night.
Then something kind of funny happened. The very first page I happened to open to was about anxiety. Of course it was. It explains the difference between anxiety, which everyone deals with at least once in their life, and anxiety disorders, which affect about 20 percent of people. That number lines up with the National Institute of Mental Health's estimate that about 19.1 percent of U.S. adults have had an anxiety disorder in the past year. I've been diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder, so reading that section felt personal in the best way. It was validating to see the difference explained so clearly in a Christian book.
I also love the way this book reads. Things are explained in an easy-to-understand way, and it never feels preachy or clinical. Jennifer writes like someone who's been there.
How You Can Use It
Start by reading the quick-start guide and the section on the science behind breathwork. Then pick one breath prayer and try it. Breathe in slowly through your nose while you pray the first part, then breathe out slowly while you pray the second part. Repeat it a few times. That's it.
There's real research on why slow breathing helps. A 2021 study in Scientific Reports found that just one session of deep, slow breathing increased vagal activity and lowered anxiety in both younger and older adults. Your vagus nerve plays a big part in calming your body down, so slowing your breath is a simple way to tell your nervous system it's safe.
Here are a few easy ways to work it into your day:
- Pray one breath prayer before you get out of bed in the morning.
- Use one in the car before you walk into work, church, or a doctor's appointment.
- Keep it on your nightstand for those nights when your mind won't shut off.
- Memorize a favorite so you can use it anywhere, even without the book.
Taking care of your mind and body go together. If you're working on your health in other ways too, I shared what's helped me in my post on managing PCOS and blood sugar in the fall.
My Favorite Takeaways
First, calm can be part of your faith. Learning to slow your breathing doesn't mean you trust God less. It can be one of the ways you remind yourself that He's in control.
Second, a prayer doesn't have to be long to count. Some days the best you can do is one verse and three slow breaths. This book makes that feel like enough, because it is.
Third, it's okay to name anxiety for what it is. Seeing the difference between everyday worry and an anxiety disorder spelled out in a faith-based book was a big deal for me. Christians struggle with this too, and we don't need to hide it.
Where to Get Breath as Prayer Special Edition and Who to Gift It To
This book would encourage someone living with anxiety, a friend who's grieving, a caregiver who never gets a break, or a teen who's stressed about school. It helps most during hard medical seasons, sleepless nights, big life changes, and the busy, emotional stretch of the holidays. As a gift, it's a beautiful pick for a mom, sister, best friend, coworker, or anyone in your life who carries a lot. And since it looks this good, it feels special to give without being over the top.

Breath as Prayer FAQs
What is a breath prayer?
A breath prayer is a short prayer, usually taken from Scripture, that you pray in two parts. You pray the first part as you breathe in and the second part as you breathe out. It's a simple way to slow your body down and focus your mind on God at the same time. Christians have used short, repeated prayers for centuries. Jennifer Tucker's approach keeps every prayer tied to a specific Bible verse, and you can read more on her Breath as Prayer page.
What's the difference between the original and the special edition?
The special edition is a premium version of the bestselling original. It's bigger, at 6-by-8 inches instead of 5-by-7, and it adds 10 new bonus breath prayers. It also has a translucent vellum jacket over a black hardcover, pink-stained page edges, a pink ribbon marker, and floral endsheets. The content is otherwise built on the same format of Scripture, devotion, and breath prayer. If you're buying a gift, the special edition is the one to get.
Is Breath as Prayer good for people with anxiety disorders?
It can be a helpful tool, but it isn't a treatment. The book explains the difference between normal anxiety and anxiety disorders, and it includes the science behind how slow breathing calms the nervous system. Research like a 2021 Scientific Reports study on slow breathing supports that. If you live with an anxiety disorder like I do, use it alongside the care plan you have with your doctor or counselor. It works well as an extra support on hard days.
Is Breath as Prayer a good gift?
It's one of the best Christian gift books I've seen this year. The special edition is gorgeous from every angle, with its frosted sleeve, pink edges, and ribbon bookmark. It's also useful, which matters for a gift. Anyone can open it to any page and find a verse and prayer for whatever they're facing. It's a great pick for Christmas, Mother's Day, a birthday, or a "thinking of you" gift for someone going through a hard time.
